Gabriel Medina became the first Brazilian to win the third world championship in surfing. This Tuesday (14), the surfer beat fellow Brazilian Filipe Toledo in the final of the WSL Final in Lower Trestles, in the US state of California.
Medina won the first heat and in the second he didn’t give Toledo a chance, with the right to a backflip. With the title, the São Paulo native from Maresias joined a select group: Tom Curren (USA), Andy Irons (HAV) and Mick Fanning (AUS).
“I achieved my biggest goal in surfing. I’m crying now because it’s a mix of emotions. I am happy, moved. I am happy to be part of this (Brazilian) team. They pull me and I pull their level,” said Medina.
Filipe had already surpassed the gold medal in Tokyo, Italo Ferreira, to reach the final against Medina. The surfer from Ubatuba, on the north coast of São Paulo, was looking for the first title. The second heat came to a standstill for a few minutes after the organization of the race spotted a shark in the waters close to the surfers.
After the unforeseen event, Medina caught the wave that ensured his three-time championship by sending a backflip, which guaranteed a score of 9.01 to the Brazilian. With that, Toledo could not surpass the performance of his fellow countryman and got 16.36, while Gabriel closed with 17.53.
“It’s not every day you make a dream come true. Every dream seems impossible. Today is a special day for me. I have this for a long time with me. You have to work hard. There is no other way. It has a lot of passion. You have to let surfing do the talking. That day will stay in my life forever. I had to surf a lot to conquer it”, celebrated Gabriel on the way out of the water.
