Together with the fees, the winning bidder paid a record amount of £ 18.6 million (HUF 7.87 billion) at a London auction on Thursday for Banksy’s work, which was cut into half-strips by a paper-cut paper cutter at a London auction three years ago.
The famous and hidden British graffiti artist’s Girl With Balloon, painted with paint spray, sold in October 2018 for around € 1.2 million at a London auction. After hitting the last bid, to the astonishment of the participants in the auction at the time, a cutter hidden in a picture frame shredded the picture into strips. After the auction, the artist announced that it was intentional to split the image, which gave birth to a new work called Love is in the Bin. The picture then became the most expensive Banksy work sold.
The result of Thursday’s auction marks a new record for Banksy. The creative Game Changer, a painting depicting a nurse as a superhero and symbolizing his gratitude to British health workers, sold for £ 16.76 million (£ 7.1 billion) at an auction at a March auction. In the case of Love is in the Bin, auctioneer Sotheby’s had a maximum knockdown price of £ 6 million.
