IOC Vice President Dismisses Pressing China on Human Rights

Vice-presidente do COI John Coates

MELBOURNE (Reuters) – The International Olympic Committee will not pressure China, which will host the 2022 Winter Olympics, on the country’s human rights record because it is not the body’s purview to dictate rules to sovereign nations, the vice president said. from the IOC, John Coates, this Wednesday.

Human rights groups and US lawmakers pressure the IOC to postpone next year’s Beijing Winter Games and change its venue unless China ends what the US classifies as an ongoing genocide of Uighurs and others Muslim minorities.

Chinese authorities are accused of facilitating forced labor by detaining an estimated one million Uighurs and other Muslim minorities in labor camps since 2016.

China denies wrongdoing, saying it has set up vocational training centers to fight extremism.

Coates said the IOC’s human rights competence only covers the “Olympic movement”.

“The IOC does place a lot of emphasis on human rights,” Coates told reporters at a news conference.

“I know it’s a very important part of the fundamental principles of Olympism, the fundamental principles set out in the Olympic Charter,” he said.

“We don’t have the ability to go into a country and tell them what to do. All we can do is award the Olympics to a country, under conditions outlined in a host contract… and then see that they are followed.”
