Johan Roijakkers new basketball coach of legendary Varese

The Dutch Belgian Johan Roijakkers (41) is the new coach of the Italian legendary club Varese. Johan Roijakkers still lives in Belgium (Neerpelt) and was for years the assistant of the American top coach Chris Finch at Bree and Bergen. Afterwards, he himself became head coach of Bree and Bergen. He was also an assistant to Finch for a time in the NBA G-League (training league) and with Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

While Chris Finch worked his way up to coach of Minnesota Timberwolves after assistant coach (including Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets) in the NBA, Roijakkers started a European career. He was coach at the Slovakian Prievidze, for eight years the sporting boss at the German Göttingen, the club where Roel Moors is now coach, and coach of the German Bamberg until the end of November.

Roijakkers was several times associated with a return to Belgium, was in the picture at Telenet Giants Antwerp to succeed Christophe Beghin, but now signed a three-year contract with Varese. At the Italian club, the Argentine ex-NBA player Luis Scola is the new General Manager. Varese is a big name in Italian basketball history. It won ten titles, four times the Italian Cup and seven times a European trophy, of which no fewer than five times the Euroleague. Johan Roijakkers makes his debut on Sunday with Varese against Trieste. In the Italian Serie A, Varese is currently in last place with 3 out of 13.
