“We played a very creditable first half. Our team tried to instill confidence by playing opportunistically, in a way that would have the supporters behind us. We succeeded in that, but we are not finishing our chances. And then there is disappointment again at half time because after a corner we still fall behind. Afterwards we gave it a bad follow-up. A score like that does a lot to the team, because in the second half we played without self-confidence.”

“Whether we should have shown no reaction after that delay? That’s always easy to say. But if you have to deal with disappointment after disappointment, it’s not always easy,” says Van den Brom. “It’s annoying and worrying. Because I’ve always said that as long as our football continues to be meritorious, we shouldn’t worry. But I didn’t see that in the second half. We need to discuss this with the players. The freshness was also gone in the second half.”

Much-discussed switch

During the match there was a lot of boos when crowd favorite Junya Ito was substituted. “I’m also a very big fan of his, but what people don’t know is that he was already suffering at rest and doubted whether he could continue. That didn’t work anymore,” explained Van den Brom. “Normally you never change him, but you had to. The same goes for Bryan Heynen. That also adds to the fact that you have to remove two basic players with injuries.”

And what about Racing Genk now, after losing six of its seven games in all competitions in recent weeks? “It would be weird if we don’t want to anymore. The staff is no less disappointed. We do everything together and put ourselves in this situation, now we have to get out. We have two days for that, because then there is another relocation on the program.”
