The French forward of Real Madrid, Karim Benzema, has been csentenced to one year in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros after being found guilty of complicity in the attempt to blackmail Mathieu Valbuena with a video of sexual content. This decision reopens the controversy in France with the selection ‘Bleu’ and Deschamps in the sights for a possible veto again.
This Wednesday, the Court of Versailles communicated its sentence in a case that came to light six years ago, in which it found the Real Madrid.
“Karim Benzema became personally involved insistently to try to convince Mathieu Valbuena to meet with his henchman”, Explained the court, according to the newspaper ‘L’Equipe’.
The Prosecutor’s Office had requested to Benzema a conditional prison sentence of ten months and a fine of 75,000 euros, a request that the soccer player’s defense had considered out of place because he had not done “anything” and asking for his acquittal.
Despite everything, Noël Le Graet, president of the French Federation soccer, has wanted to settle the rumors about a possible new veto of Benzema by Deschamps.
“Even if Karim didn’t appeal, nothing changes for me. You can make a mistake, get suspended, and go back to work. There is no obstacle for him to continue with the national team”, He pointed out.
Thus, the Real Madrid striker will play the 2022 World Cup in Qatar except for a capital surprise. The one from Lyon will appeal this sentence, which only implies that he will go to jail in case of reoffending.
Let us remember that the so-called ‘Valbuena case’ marginalized Benzema of his selection almost six years, missing, among other commitments, the World Cup Russia 2018 where the Gauls won the title. Finally, he returned this year for the Eurocup.
