Kenyan Agnes Tirop, 4th in the 5000m at the Tokyo Olympics, stabbed to death at home

Kenyan athlete Agnes Tirop, who finished fourth in the 5,000m at the last Olympic Games in Tokyo, was found dead at her home in the Kenyan village of Iten. A Kenyan federation board member told local newspaper The Standard that Tirop, 25, was likely stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend. She had several stab wounds in the abdomen.

Tirop was one of Kenya’s best athletes. At the London 2017 and Doha 2019 World Championships, she took bronze in the 10,000 meters. Tirop narrowly missed a medal in the 5000 meters in Tokyo.

On September 12, she broke the world record in the 10 kilometer road in Herzogenaurach, Germany, in a race for women only. In 30:01, Tirop improved by 28 seconds from the old world record that Moroccan Asmae Leghzaoui had set in 2002.

She also won the world cross country title in 2015 in Qingzhen Guiyang, China.
