A police spokesman confirmed that the man, Emmanuel Rotich, was arrested in Mombasa. He will be brought to trial tomorrow/Friday.

Tirop, 25, was found dead at her home in Iten, an elevated town in western Kenya where many long-distance runners train. The two-time World Cup medalist in the 10,000 meters (2017 and 2019) and number four of the Tokyo Games in the 5,000 meters was stabbed.

Rotich is considered the prime suspect because he called Tirop’s parents and said he had “done something bad”. The murder of the promising athlete was big news in the Kenyan media. The National Athletics Federation suspended all competitions for two weeks as a tribute and President Uhuru Kenyatta also paid tribute.
