Kenyan athlete Agnes Tirop, who finished fourth in the 5000 meters at the recent Tokyo Olympics, has been found dead in her home in the Kenyan village of Iten. A board member of the Kenyan federation says in the local newspaper The Standard that 25-year-old Tirop was probably stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend. She had stab wounds to her abdomen.
Tirop was one of the best athletes in Kenya. She took bronze in the 10,000 meters at the London 2017 and Doha 2019 World Cups. In Doha, the world title went to the Dutch Sifan Hassan, who became Olympic champion in the 5000 and 10,000 meters in Tokyo last summer. Tirop just missed a medal in Tokyo in the 5000 meters.
A few weeks after the Games, she set a world record in the 10 kilometers in a women-only race in Herzogenaurach, Germany. With 30.01, Tirop dived no less than 28 seconds below the old top time that had been in the name of the Moroccan Asmae Leghzaoui since 2002.
