Koen Naert will appear at the start of the fifth edition of the Athora Great Bruges Marathon on Sunday. Naert, the European marathon champion of 2018 and number 10 of the past Olympic Games, starts as a luxury hare for his friends from Olympic Brugge and the West-Flemish Alliance. Tim Calliauw is the top favourite.
Naert is the most notable name on the list of participants. The West-Flemish is godfather of the West-Flemish Alliance, a select training group of athletics club Olympic Brugge led by trainer Stijn Fincioen. “Koen will race for Tim Calliauw on Sunday”, says Fincioen, who became Belgian champion in the marathon in 2013. “Tim made his marathon debut in Rotterdam in 2019 with a time of 2h29:24. On Sunday in Bruges, he is aiming for a time of 2h25 in his own city.”
More than 5000 sports enthusiasts have registered for the fifth edition of the Athora Great Bruges Marathon. That is the same number as in the previous edition, in 2019.
