Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres during a meeting on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly stressed the importance of strengthening the role of the organization on the world stage and the intention to develop cooperation.
“Both sides stressed the importance of further strengthening the central role of the UN in the world arena and reaffirmed the focus on the development of mutually beneficial cooperation between Russia and the world Organization,” message Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
A thorough exchange of views took place on a wide range of pressing international issues, including the UN system’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and preparations for the 26th session of the conference of the parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A number of regional topics were also touched upon, including the situation in Afghanistan, in the east of Ukraine, in Syria and Libya. The issues of appointment to leading positions in the UN system were discussed separately.
The Russian Foreign Minister takes part in the events of the high-level week of the UN General Assembly. On September 22, the heads of the foreign affairs agencies of the countries of the “five” of the Security Council met with the UN Secretary General.
