Those who rely on the car should avoid Leipzig on Sunday. At least around the city center. Because the traffic artery there, the closed city ring, will belong entirely to cyclists, pedestrians and climate activists on this day.

“The one-day closure of the inner city ring is a consciously set, strong signal for a traffic turnaround”, announced Mayor Jung the car-free day. This should be an incentive to “rethink our mobility habits”.

In this way, the ring becomes a stage for activists of all stripes. From the citizen picnic with a 30 meter long board to dance demos, climate fitness, cargo bike parcours to the “walking gear” parade, 22 activities have been registered.

The spectacle is integrated into the European Mobility Week, which will take place from tomorrow until September 22nd with numerous events such as lectures and guided city walks.

For Leipzig’s drivers, Friday will be a test of patience. During the so-called Parking Day, whose motto is “More space for people instead of cars”, various associations want to annex parking areas in several parts of the city with the blessing of the city administration.
