A project aimed at making the island of Porto Santo self-sufficient in terms of energy, through the transformation of algae into biofuel, has become a drain on public funds over the last 13 years. The Court of Auditors gave the Regional Government of Madeira until the end of July to initiate “concrete actions” aimed at defending the investment made to date, which amounts to more than 54 million euros, and to stop a financial loss of the order of four million annually since 2019.
