A defeat. Again. Visiting Watford this time. And how. 4-1. A beating. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can’t get Manchester United on track. With a 4 out of 21, Man United sinks completely into the Premier League. It is already twelve points behind leader Chelsea. Trainer Solskjaer puts his hand in his bosom.

Dramatic first half for Manchester United at Vicarage Road. After eleven minutes, The Mancunians already allowed a penalty, but they were spared: Ismaila Sarr missed the eleven meter. Fifteen minutes later it was done. Joshua King hit the mark. Just before the break, Sarr corrected his mistake and made it 2-0 for the home side. For United, a second consecutive defeat – and fourth in five games – appeared to be in the making at the time.

Van de Beek to the rescue

It made Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reach for the last resort. The irritated coach missed the injured Raphaël Varane and Paul Pogba and also saw Mason Greenwood drop out with a corona infection, so he threw Donny van de Beek into the fight at halftime. The Dutchman only played sixteen minutes in competition this season and now suddenly got a full half to turn the tide. Successfully. Van de Beek was on the field for less than five minutes when he easily headed the ball in for open goal.

Punishment by Dennis

The signal for Man United to push on, although it would not be able to sting a second against the nets. Cristiano Ronaldo saw another goal disallowed for offside. What’s more, in injury time, Joao Pedro – assisted by Emmanuel Dennis – made it 3-1. And a few minutes later, the latter caused an outright beating. 4-1. At a time when you should have straightened your back. Dramatic. For Man United it is already the fifth loss in twelve league games. Unheard of for a top club. United thus puts a very meager 4 on 21 on the table. The ground under Solskjaer’s feet is getting hotter again.

Solskjaer: “I apologize to the fans”

“I apologize to the fans, we are ashamed of the way we are losing here,” coach Solskjaer said after the game. “Sometimes you just have to dare to say ‘sorry’. The fans always support our players, whoever is on the pitch. We know we’re on a bad streak, but that’s football,” said Solskjaer, who did not want to talk about a possible dismissal. His fate seemed sealed earlier this season.

“I will continue to work for this club, as I have been doing for eighteen years. Communication with the board is good and what is said will therefore remain between us. But the results are not good, we know that. We were unbeaten for thirty games and now we lose twice in a row, while conceding four goals twice. Of course something is not right. It didn’t work out, especially in the first half. After the break we played as if we had nothing to lose and that went better. Unfortunately, that doesn’t yield anything.”
