The second stage of the Tour de Luxembourg was won by the Swiss Marc Hirschi, good for his first victory of the season. The rider of UAE Team Emirates is also the new leader. Also in the Giro della Toscana an old acquaintance won for the first time in a long time: the Dane Michael Valgren rode solo to victory.
The rain made it a big deal between Steinfort and Eschdorf. Added to this was the multiple ascent towards Eschdorf. The top of the last scramble was just before the finish line.
Frenchman Turgis tried to outwit the peloton in the last loop. The Team Total Energies speed rider quickly cut a small gap but Deceuninck – Quick Step in the service of leader Almeida and UAE Team Emirates kept the Frenchman within reach ahead of the final climb towards Eschdorf. As expected, that last slope was too much for Turgis to allow a select group to decide who would win the stage. The trio Conti-Hirschi-Quintana tried to escape from the select peloton in the final phase. Mandatory leader Almeida to give chase himself. For Marc Hirschi it wasn’t fast enough at the front. The Swiss abandoned his two companions. From the peloton, Thibaut Pinot tried to make the crossing, but Hirschi didn’t seem to crack when passing the rag of the last kilometer. The Swiss held on, Almeida won the sprint for second place ahead of Frenchman Gaudu, but had to give up his leader’s jersey to Hirschi.
Giro della Toscana: victory for Valgren
In the Giro della Toscana, the victory went to the Dane Michael Valgren. For the 29-year-old Dane from EF Education – Nippo, it was the first victory since his victory in the Amstel Gold Race, three years ago. Valgren broke away solo from a leading group with the approval of teammate Rigoberto Uran. The Dane held on easily and eventually took the lead by over a minute over Alessandro De Marchi , with Diego Ulissi taking third place a few seconds later. Valgren will also be at the start of the World Cup in Antwerp next week, but within the Danish selection, Magnus Cort Nielsen and Mads Pedersen are mainly drawn.
