The chancellor of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, one of the candidates to succeed the president Andrés Manuel López Obrador In 2024, on Wednesday he expressed his intentions to seek the presidential candidacy in that year since, he said, for him it is a life commitment.
In a radio interview for Grupo Fórmula, with journalist Joaquín López-Dóriga, Ebrard said he was interested in participating in the contest, but pointed out that first he has to carry out the responsibility he has in the current Mexican government as Secretary of Foreign Relations.

“Of course, of course I am interested, it is something that has been my life commitment and no way that now I say no, but now what we have to do is carry out our responsibility”, said Ebrard at the interview.
“And in two years or when they are called to participate, we will be there (…) you don’t have to be distracted because if you get distracted you will fall”he added.
“I think, definitely and that is my conviction, to participate according to the rules that are given in Morena (National Regeneration Movement party) in the first place, which is the political project in which I am participating, and Morena will already determine and they will tell us how the process is going to be and we are going to be there ”, exposed.
The statements of Ebrard occurred hours after the mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, also aspiring to succeed López Obrador in 2024, defended this Wednesday that the Morena elect its candidate through a poll of the militancy.
“It is what is established in the statutes of the party to which we belong, it is something in which I agree and also the president has always maintained it”Said the head of the capital city government when questioned at a press conference.
Sheinbaum considered that choosing the candidate through an internal poll, the method used to define the aspiring state governors, is “the most democratic” and “a representation of what the people think.”
The mayor starts as a favorite to be the face-to-face candidate of the leftist Morena in 2024 along with Chancellor Ebrard.
López Obrador completed a tour of several points in the capital with Sheinbaum last week, but on Tuesday he ruled out in his morning press conference that it is his favorite.
“I have no favorite, no favorite”, stressed the president, who defended that Morena carry out a survey to define his presidential candidate.
On the other hand, the leader of Morena in the Senate, Ricardo Monreal, who also wants to run for the presidency, bet on Tuesday to call primary elections and thus “continue democratizing” the party.
The mechanism of the survey has been criticized within the party by those who consider that it is a not very transparent methodology and that it favors candidates related to the leadership.
The race for the presidential succession in Mexico It started early, with three years to go before the elections, when López Obrador recently named six possible successors.
In addition to Sheinbaum and Ebrard, the best placed, he pointed out the Mexican ambassador to the UN, Juan Ramón de la Fuente; the Mexican ambassador to the United States, Esteban Moctezuma; the Secretary of Economy, Tatiana Clouthier; and the Secretary of Energy, Rocío Nahle.
