The Six Days of Ghent did not end as Mark Cavendish had in mind. The Deceuninck – Quick Step rider crashed heavily in the final team race, breaking two ribs and suffering a ‘minor’ collapsed lung. ‘Cav’ is staying at the UZ in Ghent.

But for the four-time stage winner in the 2021 Tour, the sun seems to be shining again. From his sickbed, the 36-year-old Briton extensively thanked the fans for their supportive messages and was able to say another joke. Cavendish will probably have to stay in Ghent for a few more days before he can return home. He would also sign his new contract with Patrick Lefevere in the ‘aftermath’ of the Ghent Six Days. It is not yet clear whether this has already happened or when this will happen, but it is now certain that the ex-world champion will be admired next year in the Quick-Step – Alpha Vinyl jersey.
