Djokovic will debut against rival of the classification

The US Open champion, Daniil Medvedev, is one victory away from a great new trophy.

Second ranked Russian beat Norwegian 6-4, 6-2 Casper Ruud, classified for the first time, on Saturday and will play the championship match in ATP Finals.

Medvedev’s backhand ended a 32-shot rally and caused a break in the first set

Medvedev, who won the season-ending tournament in the top eight of the standings last year, will face the winner of the duel between Novak Djokovic and number 3 Alexander Zverev on Sunday.

At the US Open in September, Medvedev dashed Djokovic’s dream of winning the Grand Slam in a calendar year by beating the Serb in the final to lift his first major trophy.

A Medvedev backhand ended a 32-shot rally and caused a break in the first set. The Russian began to vary his game with rises to the net and drop shots when he broke his opponent’s serve again in the middle of the second set.

He broke Ruud again when he interrupted a point to challenge a decision, which was confirmed by the review, giving Medvedev the opportunity to serve for the match.

A perfect serve and a volley gave Medvedev the victory in his first match point. Medvedev did not face a single break point and won 11 of 15 points at the net.
