WHO recommends reinforcement of CoronaVac for those over 60 years old

On Wednesday (13), more than 100 million Brazilians were already with the complete vaccination schedule — with two doses or a single dose immunizer — against covid-19. The Ministry of Health brand points to the success of immunization against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. At the moment, the country has 47% of the population fully vaccinated.

In total, 249.7 million doses were applied in the population, with 149.7 million receiving the first dose, and 100 million had the application of two doses or a single dose. In addition, 2.3 million booster doses were given to priority groups for vaccination against covid-19.

To achieve these immunization indicators, the country adopts four vaccines against covid-19: Covishield (AstraZeneca/Oxford/Fiocruz); CoronaVac (Sinovac/Butatan); ComiRNAty (Pfizer/BioNTech); and the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) formula.

Goal is to reach 75%

The indications of vaccination against covid-19 are quite positive across the country, however, the infectious agent still circulates throughout the country. According to a survey by the Imperial College of London, the transmission rate — also known as Rt or R rate — is at 0.6. This is the lowest number ever recorded in Brazil since the arrival of the virus.

However, prevention measures must be respected by everyone, including those who received the two doses or the single dose immunizer, as the numbers of the disease fall. This means that one should avoid crowds, maintain social distance, adopt the use of masks and alcohol gel, for example.

On the other hand, it has been verified that vaccines, when applied massively, can represent a drop in the number of hospitalizations and disease control. The study by the Butantan Institute, in Serrana, in the interior of São Paulo, pointed to the need to immunize at least 75% of the population to cut the transmission of the coronavirus. In the inner city of São Paulo, the CoronaVac vaccine was used in practically the entire adult population and deaths dropped by 95%.

On the international scene, Brazil occupies the 62nd position in the ranking of countries in vaccination against covid-19 in relation to the population of each nation. This is what the survey by the Johns Hopkins University, based in the United States, points out. However, the country is above the world average, calculated at around 35%.

If only the absolute numbers of vaccination are considered, Brazil ranks fourth as the country with more people with the complete vaccination cycle, behind the United States (187.7 million), India (272.6 million) and China ( 1.047 billion).
