Museum De Fundatie gets extra director after investigation into director Ralph Keuning

Museum De Fundatie in Zwolle will have a second director in addition to the discredited director Ralph Keuning. The chairman of the supervisory board, Roger van Boxtel, announced this on Thursday during an online plenary staff meeting.

The expansion of the board comes after an external investigation into the behavior of Keuning, who has been leading De Fundatie for fifteen years. Several of the 58 employees had complained about his way of communicating. According to the research, this was experienced as strongly directive and often confrontational, especially in recent years. It also became clear that the attention for and treatment of the employees has fallen short in recent years, partly as a result of the ambitions of the director and the growth of the museum.

“Insisting conversations” have been held with Keuning about his behavior, said Van Boxtel. In it, the director indicated that he had not sufficiently realized the impact his leadership style and enthusiasm had on a large part of the employees. He deeply regrets this, he said during the online meeting on Thursday. He apologized and promised to work on his behavior.

The new director will form a collegial board together with Keuning and will be charged with the focus areas of personnel, organization and resources. The supervisory board said that with the additional director it “looks forward to the future of the museum with confidence”.
