In the new church garden around the church of Poederlee (Lille) there is room for a burial mound and some remarkable tombstones have also been preserved. The Lille City Council has approved the redevelopment of the garden around the church.

The local government of Lille is also working on the construction of a church garden around the Sint-Jan-Baptistkerk in Poederlee. The plans are part of the Wish Image Lille-Poederlee that was developed together with the residents. The church was still surrounded by old graves on a plain of sand. Many graves are in very bad condition. Last year, the municipality gave relatives the opportunity to remove objects, tombs or other ornaments themselves. Since the end of 2020, the municipal council has owned the funerary monuments. The municipality wants to create a garden with flowers, plants and grass while preserving a number of gravestones with a certain historical or artistic added value.

The city council approved the plan, with the municipality allocating almost 300,000 euros for the redevelopment. Opposition member Paul Diels (CD&V) asked what will happen to the large burial vault. “We went to look at that grave with some family members. They did not want to restore the monument themselves. We are creating a small burial mound where we integrate part of that burial vault, among other things,” said Mayor Marleen Peeters (N-VA). At the end of 2019, the municipality will place signs around the church of Poederlee stating that most graves are disappearing.
