The annual New Year’s reception of the municipality of Lille is canceled at the beginning of January. The college of aldermen decided to shift the New Year’s drink to spring due to the bad corona figures.
“We are thinking of moving the New Year’s reception to March, or even May, but then there will be some communion parties,” said Marleen Peeters (N-VA), mayor of Lille at the online city council. “There are already other municipal authorities that are planning the New Year’s reception during the Easter holidays.”
It has been a tradition in Lille for many years that the inhabitants can ring in the New Year with a drink and a snack at the beginning of January. The last New Year’s reception took place in January 2020 on the playground of the new municipal primary school in Gierle. At the beginning of this year, due to the corona crisis, no New Year’s drink could take place at all. It is the intention of the council of aldermen to ring in the new year in a different district each year. (bvdl)
