Vacancies and derelict areas, streets that are too big and not enough quality of life are the problem children on the main traffic route Zwickauer Straße, as city planner Grit Stillger explained. Chemnitz wants to counter these problems – in cooperation with property owners – over the next 15 years with a large package of measures.

This involves the redesign of the street space and the upgrading of buildings. For example, many small parks are to fill the gaps, and the Kappelbach is to be renatured and made accessible. A green classroom is planned in the area of the former manor, “a wildly overgrown green area”. Old buildings should be secured and thus saved from decay.

There will only be a few demolitions, if at all: “The property opposite the tulle factory is very weathered and not relevant for monuments. A demolition would be possible here,” says Stillger.

Similar game on the Sonnenberg: There, among other things, investments are being made in the emerging cultural hotspot “Stadtwirtschaft” and in the old foundry. Also in tree planting, the conversion of drinking water and sewage pipes and in district management.
