Alfonso Chaviano

Madrid Spain.- Alfonso Chaviano Peláez, activist of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), died this Wednesday in Santiago de Cuba, the province where he lived.

The news was announced by Ana Belkis Ferrer, sister of the political prisoner and leader of the UNPACU, José Daniel Ferrer.

Via Twitter Ana Belkis Ferrer denounced that Chaviano Peláez had been detained, violated and threatened, during the first days of this month by State Security.

As he explained, the former political prisoner suffered from a serious lung disease and lived with a cannula inserted after having a tracheotomy performed.

Ferrer accompanied his publication with a video of Alfonso Chaviano Peláez, in which he, with difficulty speaking due to his illness, denounced the regime’s arbitrary arrests.

In another post shared on Facebook, Ana Belkis Ferrer detailed: “Alfonso was recently the victim of brutal dictatorial repression when he tried to reach the UNPACU headquarters in Reparto Altamira. The hitman known as Mario detained him, attacked and threatened him. He got so bad inside the patrol car that they had to take him to the military hospital where he stayed for three days”.

“We demand justice for all the victims of communism and the immediate and unconditional freedom of all political prisoners,” said the opponent.

In April of last year, José Daniel Ferrer shared images of one of the many arrests against Alfonso Chaviano.

In a video posted on the UNPACU YouTube channel, Ferrer recounted how the regime’s agents used violence against residents of the Altamira neighborhood who were trying to reach the headquarters of the Patriotic Union of Cuba in search of food and medical care.

“The political police block the way for Alfonso Chaviano Peláez, a sick man who comes to the UNPACU headquarters in search of medical care and food, and for Wilder Cervantes Cuza, an activist from Santiago,” said Ferrer, currently imprisoned in the prison of Green sea.
