Novak Djokovic (ATP 1) has received his ticket for the quarterfinals of the Masters 1,000 tournament in Madrid (6,744,165 euros) as a gift. The Serb should have faced Andy Murray (ATP 78) in the third round, but he dropped out due to illness.
“Unfortunately, Andy Murray will not be playing at Manolo Santana Stadium due to illness. We wish you a speedy recovery Andy,” the organization said.
The duel between the two tenors was scheduled as the opening match on center court on Thursday at 12 noon. It would be the 37th meeting between the two grand slam champions, but only the first since 2017. Murray has struggled with a lot of injuries in recent years. The 34-year-old Djokovic leads 25-11 against his Scottish peer.
In the quarterfinals, the number 1 in the world will compete against the Pole Hubert Hurkacz (ATP 14) or his compatriot Dusan Lajovic (ATP 77).
The Serb is aiming for a fourth title in Madrid after winning in 2011, 2016 and 2019.
