Asia concentrates 77.9% of Chile's mining exports, followed by the United States

The mining sector reached 58.8% of Chilean exports as of September 2022, totaling US$43,051 million. This implied a 2.9% drop compared to the same period in 2021, according to the information published this Wednesday by the Central Bank.

By destinations, Asia concentrates 77.9% of participation in mining shipments, followed by the United States with 7.9%, the European Union with 6.4%, the Aladi countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico , Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela) with 4.2% and the rest of the world with 3.6%.

Between January and September 2022, shipments of metallic minerals represented 83.7% of mining shipments. Among them, copper represents 90.1% of the shipments of this subsector, for a value of US$ 32,467 million, which implied a decrease of 16.4% compared to the period January-September 2021. Concentrates and cathodes have a participation of 50.8% and 42.2%, respectively, in the total copper exported.

Asia was the main destination for copper in the period January-September 2022, concentrating 78.8% of shipments, with US$ 25,588 million, which represented a fall of 9.5% compared to the same period of the previous year. The United States continued in importance, receiving shipments for US$ 2,786 million, which meant a decrease of 41.7%.

The main buyers of the red metal during the first nine months of 2022 were China, with a participation of 55.5% of the total, followed by Japan with 9.0%, the United States with 8.6%, and South Korea with 7.6%.

In the first three quarters of 2022, gold exports reached US$587 million, which implied a 3.1% drop compared to the same period of the previous year, and represented 1.4% of shipments of metallic products. .

During the first nine months of the year, gold exports were concentrated in metallic gold, with shipments of US$558 million, which represented 94.9% of the total exported. The rest of the exports were made in the form of gold ore.

The main destinations for gold in the period January-September 2022 were Switzerland and the United Stateswith shares of 86.1% and 7.1%, respectively

In the first three quarters of 2022, silver shipments reached US$271 million, which represented 0.8% of metal mining exports, and represented a decrease of 14.4%, compared to the same period of the year. 2021.

Raw unalloyed silver was the main product exported in the period January-September 2022, with shipments worth US$203 million and a 74.9% share. It was followed by alloyed raw silver with exports of US$ 67 million, equivalent to 24.7% of the total silver exported.

The main buyers of silver during the first nine months of 2022 were the United States and Switzerland, with shares of 67.2% and 32.1%, respectively.

In the first three quarters of 2022, non-metallic mining products registered exports of US$ 7,028 million, which implied an increase of 433.2% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The main non-metallic minerals exported were lithium carbonate, iodine and salt. In the period January-September 2022, lithium carbonate led exports with shipments of US$ 5,816 million, which meant an increase of 841.9%. It was followed by iodine with US$784 million and salt with US$118 million, which compared to the same period of the previous year represented growth of 83.1% and 25.4%, respectively.

In this period, the main destination for non-metallic minerals was Asia with a share of 82.9%. The European Union followed with 8.0%.

During the same period, lithium carbonate was mainly exported to Asia, which received 94.2% of shipments. While iodine was imported mainly by Asia (37.3%) and the European Union (36.6%). Finally, the main destinations for salt were the United States (54.9%) and Aladi (37.1%).
