Axel Witsel is on his way to Atlético Madrid. This is reported by the Walloon public broadcaster RTBF. The Red Devil is at the end of his contract with Borussia Dortmund and is due to take his medical tests on Monday in the Spanish capital, where a one-year contract with an option for an extra season is expected to be ready.
Witsel has been associated with several clubs lately, of which Olympique Marseille seemed the most concrete option. Atlético Madrid would now become the new home of the Red Devil. After the medical tests on Monday, the contract would be signed next Tuesday. In the meantime, Witsel would also have had a “constructive conversation” with Atlético trainer Diego Simeone, RTBF writes.
The now 33-year-old Witsel would play in La Liga for the first time thanks to this switch. He played for Borussia Dortmund for the past four seasons, where his contract will expire at the end of this month. Before that he was also active at the Chinese Tianjin, Zenit Saint Petersburg and Benfica. He started his career at Standard, where he also went through the youth series.
