Mauri Vansevenant finished fifth in the fourth Giro stage after losing the sprint for fourth place to Sylvain Moniquet. “That sprint wasn’t much,” he said disappointed.

The Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl rider virtually rode in pink for a while, but eventually saw a strong Lopez take off. “I wasn’t really busy with that sprint anymore,” he told Sporza. “The calf had already drowned, it was a sprint of dying swans. I was well within 7 km of the end to take that pink jersey, but when Kämna accelerated, my legs immediately filled up. I couldn’t follow him.”

“After that it was a matter of limiting the damage, driving to the finish and fighting for every second. Well, I am disappointed. For me personally I was in a perfect situation, I wanted to ride a very nice race and then I just fell short at the end. I did everything I could, but unfortunately I just wasn’t strong enough. That’s the finding. I felt good for a long time, but in the end my legs just ran full.”

“Too bad I just missed the podium”

Sylvain Moniquet (24) returns from Etna in fourth place. “The goal was to get into the break today,” he said afterwards. “That worked, too bad I just missed the podium.” Moniquet rode his first big round with the Vuelta last year, a thirteenth place in the 20th stage was his best result. Now in the Giro he took fourth place on day four. “I’m happy, the goal was to get into the break,” he told his team. “That worked and then it was the legs that spoke on the last climb, 22 km long. I was able to divide my effort well on Etna, but in the last 3 to 4 km it was difficult. I was tired, so the climb was just a bit too long and I miss the podium with fourth place.”

“This was the first mountain stage,” he continued. “There are 21 stages in this Giro, there are still opportunities to come and I hope the condition will get a bit better. I’m all right now. I am motivated to get another good result. Now there are two flat stages, after that I have to get back to work in the mountains.”
