Wickmayer convincingly takes the first hurdle

Yanina Wickmayer (WTA 670) convincingly qualified for the second round of the ITF tournament in Ilkley in England (grass/100,000 dollars) on Wednesday. She defeated home player Mingge Xu (WTA 1,177) in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-2. The party lasted 1 hour and 2 minutes.

In the second round / eighth finals, the Hungarian top seed Dalma Galfi (WTA 98) awaits. She eliminated American Caroline Dolehide (WTA 176) 6-3 and 6-4.

The 32-year-old Wickmayer also participates in the doubles. Alongside the Australian Arina Rodionova, she won on Tuesday in the first round 7-6 (7/5), 5-7 and 10/4 against the Greek Valentini Grammatikopoulou and the Australian Priscilla Hon. In the quarterfinals they play against the English duo Sonay Kartal/Nell Miller.

Mertens quickly advances to quarterfinals

Elise Mertens and the Chinese Zhang Shuai did not lose too much strength on Wednesday in their first round match of the women’s doubles at the WTA tournament in the British Birmingham. The top seed finished the job after just over an hour of play with 6-2 and 6-3.

In the next round they will cross the Romanian duo Monica Niculescu and Elena Gabriela Ruse. Earlier in the day they were too strong for the German Vivian Heisen and home player Samantha Murray after a three-setter.

Geerts flushes loss in singles with victory in doubles

On Wednesday evening Michael Geerts turned his game in the eighth finals of the men’s doubles of the Challenger tournament in Parma (gravel / 134,920 euros) to his will. With his Portuguese partner Gastao Elias, he sent home players Franco Agamenone and Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 6-7 (2/7) and 10/5 home.

In the quarterfinals, Geerts and Elias face the first seed with the Czech Roman Jebavy and the American Hunter Reese.

In this way, Geerts immediately flushes his loss from earlier in the day in the eighth finals of singles. In it, the number 250 in the world turned out to be no match for the Serbian second seed Dusan Lajovic (ATP 69): he had to lose out with 6-3 and 7-6 (7/3).

Minen gives up forfeit for quarter-finals doubles

Greet Minnen and Slovakian Tereza Mihalikova, the top seed in the women’s doubles at the WTA 125 tournament of the Italian Gaiba (grass/125,000 dollars), have forfeited for the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The reason is as yet unknown.

Normally, they would face Russia’s Vitalia Diatchenko and Georgia’s Oksana Kalashnikova for a place in the last four.

In singles, Minnen (WTA 88) was seventh seed in the first round against Ukrainian Kateryna Baindl (WTA 159) 7-6 (7/3) and 6-2.
