The Government of Bolivia recognized Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard on Thursday for his solidarity with former President Evo Morales by offering him asylum after the coup d’état perpetrated in the South American nation in November 2019.
Peru and Mexico strengthen trade and investment relations
The Mexican diplomat was deserving of the Legion of Honor Marshal Andrés Santa Cruz y Calahumana Decoration, in the degree of Grand Cross, after the support provided to Evo Morales and Luis Arce, currently head of state, in the face of the persecution of the coup plotters.
In this sense, Ebrard affirmed that “this is an award that recognizes, mainly, the decision of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to act resolutely at a time of crisis that could have led this beloved brother town to a major catastrophe.”
We had a very productive and constructive meeting with our brother Foreign Minister of Mexico, @m_ebrard in peace. It was an encounter with many memories and emotions. We thanked again for having saved our lives and reaffirmed our brotherhood proof against any adversity. pic.twitter.com/kmhoiNOX4a

At the same time, he added that “they intervened in a timely manner to prevent it, to protect the life of the then president of this country, of Bolivia, Evo Morales. At that moment it was Mexico’s turn to act; at other times he will touch other brother countries”.
Ebrard pointed out that the peoples of Bolivia and Mexico maintain a brotherly relationship and highlighted the historical humanitarian vocation in protecting the victims of persecution.
As part of his visit to Bolivia, the Mexican Foreign Minister witnessed the launch of the Mexico-Bolivia Binational Chamber of Commerce and Investment, which includes 25 companies from both countries.
Based on this, the Mexican diplomacy specified that there is currently “great potential to increase investment and reciprocal trade, given the complementarity of the two economies and the understanding between the governments.”
