The president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) returned this Tuesday, 14, to criticize the president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Edson Fachin, when saying in a speech during an event in São Paulo that the minister gave “tremendous collaboration” to drug trafficking and “banditry in general” by restricting police operations in the hills of Rio de Janeiro.
Since the end of May, Bolsonaro has made a series of attacks on Fachin, whom he has accused of having been “a lawyer for the MST (the landless movement), of “owing favors” to the former president. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and of not having impartiality to command the electoral process. The background to the attacks on Fachin is the eternal offensive that Bolsonaro has made to discredit the Brazilian electoral system, especially electronic voting machines.
This Tuesday, at the opening of the 5th Investment Forum Brazil 2022, Bolsonaro defended his policy of releasing weapons to the population and took the opportunity to amend the criticism of Fachin. “In the hills of Rio, where Fachin says the police cannot enter or fly over helicopters, there are rifles. It became a refuge from banditry from all over Brazil. Congratulations, Minister Fachin. A tremendous collaboration with drug trafficking, with banditry in general,” he said.
Soon after, he attacked the ministers of the Federal Supreme Court more generally. “Look, is this a lie? Is this fake news or is it true? Ah, we cannot criticize decisions. Why not? Who do they think they are?” she stated.

Bolsonaro refers to Fachin’s 2020 decisions, in which the minister restricted police operations in communities in Rio de Janeiro and the use of helicopters during the pandemic, determining that only exceptional actions could be carried out, always with immediate communication to the Public Ministry, who is responsible for controlling police activity.
The decisions of Fachin, who is the rapporteur of a lawsuit brought by the PSB, did not prevent a police operation carried out in Vila Cruzeiro, in April of this year, from leaving at least 23 dead, the second deadliest action in the history of the police in Rio de Janeiro. .
