Brussels warns EU to be prepared for quick restrictions against Covid-19 if necessary

European Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides warned this Thursday that it is not yet a “time to relax and forget about” the Covid-19 pandemic, warning Member States that they must be prepared to quickly reintroduce restrictive measures if necessary. required.

“This is not a moment of relaxation and forgetfulness, it is a time that we must take advantage of to be prepared to increase our vigilance and, therefore, I asked the Member States to consider a series of actions for the coming months, in order to develop EU preparedness and coordination [União Europeia]”, declared the responsible European responsible, at the European Parliament, in Brussels.

Speaking at the first meeting of the special parliamentary committee on the lessons of the response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Stella Kyriakides stressed that it was necessary “to have surveillance systems in place so that, in the event of a new variant and a sudden increase in cases, the Member States can immediately detect it and be able to react”.

“We need to be prepared to quickly reintroduce non-pharmaceutical measures [medidas restritivas]”, insisted the European Commissioner for Health.

He exemplified: “If we close all vaccination centers, if everything that was created is suddenly suspended and if we have a situation where we need to react, it will be more difficult to get it up and running immediately”.

Currently, around 325 million people in the EU are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and close to 230 million have received a booster dose.
