The name of the car of the year 2023 is closer. The organization Car of the Year defined the seven finalists from which the winner of the prize for the best car for sale in Europe will emerge. In 2022, the chosen one was the Kia EV6an electric model that reflects the direction that the industry is taking.

The seven finalists for the 2023 Car of the Year are the Jeep Avenger, Nissan Ariya, Renault Austral, Volkswagen ID.Buzz, Kia Niro, Peugeot 408 and Subaru Solterra/Toyota bZ 4X. The winner will be announced on February 13, during a ceremony at the Brussels Motor Show.

The trend of electrification continues to advance and there are chances that the winner will once again be a 100% electric model, as happened this year with the Kia EV6. Of the seven finalists, four are all-electric drive: the Jeep Avenger, the Nissan Ariya, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz and the Toyota bZ 4X. The Peugeot 408 and the Renault Austral are hybrids and the Kia Niro has both plug-in hybrid and 100% electric variants.

Regarding the origins, among the nominees there are three European brands (Volkswagen, Peugeot and Renault), two Japanese (Nissan and Toyota), one American (Jeep) and one Korean (Kia). From the pre-selection of 45 vehicles released last September no Chinese brand remained among the seven finalistsdespite the fact that there were 10 new electric models in the dance as candidates (including BYD with the Tang EV, Great Wall with the Ora Cat and Xpeng with the P5).

Another surprise in the final list was the absence of Italian brands. Alfa Romeo’s SUV, the Tonale, was one of the candidates, as was Ferrari’s brand new Purosangue, the first SUV in its history. The BMW i7, the electric flagship of the German premium brand, was also left out.

The Car of the Year award is awarded by a jury of specialized journalists from Europe, who will now test the seven finalist models thoroughly and score each one. To be nominated, a model must be new throughout the year in at least five European countries.
