Borgerhout

On the E313 towards Ghent and Breda, near Borgerhout, a car crashed on Friday morning after a short chase by the police. The driver (43) was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. He passed a positive alcohol test.

The accident happened around 6 a.m. On the E313, near the road works in Ranst, a patrol of the road police was overtaken by the car at a very high speed. “Due to the works, a speed limit of 50 km/h applies,” explains police spokeswoman Kim Bastiaens. “The driver passed the police at a speed of 150 km/h. That’s three times as much. The patrol immediately gave chase.”

A chase that ends not much later at the exit of Borgerhout. The driver tried to take the exit at high speed. The car lurched out of the bend and flew over the crash barriers where it ended up in the embankment. Due to the raised shrubbery, which served as a ramp, the car was catapulted back onto the roadway. The car rolled over several times and eventually came to a stop on the ramp.

“The colleagues of the road police removed the driver from his vehicle because there was talk of smoke development,” says Bastiaens. The man, 43, was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. “His condition is now stable. The driver passed a positive alcohol test.”

Due to the incident, the entire Borgerhout exit was closed for a while. Traffic was diverted via the Deurne exit.
