The morning was full of emotions for 45 couples who participated, this Saturday (06), in the community wedding at the Nossa Senhora Perpétuo Socorro State Sanctuary. A tradition of the church since 2005, the forecast is that this year another collective edition of the legitimation ceremony will be held.

To Side B, Father Reginaldo Padilha talks about the importance of contributing to the dream of couples. “We were very happy to make this dream of getting married in the church possible, because many have been married for 3, 20, 30 years. It’s always a beautiful opportunity to make this long-awaited moment come true,” he says.

In addition to the collective ceremony this month, the priest plans to hold one more this year. “We do two each year, always in August and there will be in December as well”, he says. Registration for the collective wedding itself, according to him, should begin at the end of September.

Naiane Gonçalves Botelho, 37, and Alfranio Ajala Artigas, 43, decided to hold the ceremony in the church for a special reason, their 2-year-old son. Together for 22 years, they met at the school where they studied in Aquidauana, 141 km from Campo Grande, and have been together ever since.

She explains that she saw in community marriage the chance to fulfill that desire. “We want to baptize Benício and both we and the godparents were not married in the church until now. We saw the community wedding and decided to take the opportunity to perform the baptism”, she says.

The ceremony was also an opportunity for Edson Ajala Artigas, 45, and Elisangela Fialho, 42. Chosen as Benício’s godparents, they have been together for 10 years. “The church is opening this space to fulfill this dream of ours. It was my dream to get married in church”, says Elisangela.

Despite being married civilly for a decade, Elisangela did not hide that she was anxious for the ceremony to begin. “The emotion is as if we were going to meet each other now,” she explains. The feeling is shared by Naiane who woke up at 2 am, because she couldn’t sleep.

One of the youngest couples present, Elen Cunha da Silva, 22, was the one who asked for the hand of Cristofer Moura, 23 years old. The four-year relationship, which resulted in the little one-year-old Elisa, now gains another chapter. “We already have a baby and we wanted to make it official”, says the young woman.

He already remembers how he received his girlfriend’s request two months ago. “I was at home taking care of my daughter. She sent a message asking if I wanted to get married and I said yes”, he comments.

This week, Side B told the story of two other couples attending today’s event.
