O Republicans hit the hammer and Marcelo Crivella will be a candidate for Congressman across Rio this year. The decision goes against the wishes of the former mayor of the state capital, who initially wanted to run for the Senate and later indicated that he would like to try for the state government, despite his party being in the support base of the governor’s reelection project. Cláudio Castro (PL).
Castro even turned to Jair Bolsonaro to pressure Crivella to give up the project, which was not a consensus within Republicans in Rio. The assessment around Castro was that the licensed bishop of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God could make the governor’s life difficult in the elections, given that the two would compete for the same voter, especially in the evangelical segment. A similar scenario would occur if he ran for the Senate seat, whose candidate for the governor’s ticket will be former player Romário Faria (PL-RJ).
Crivella is not president of the Republicans in Rio, but he is the strongman of the party in the state, with the largest number of votes. The insistence on launching his own candidacy strained the relationship with Castro. The understanding prevailed that he will be the party’s vote puller in the Chamber of Deputies.
