MADRID, Spain.- The renowned Cuban pole vaulter Yarisley Silva and her coach Alexandre Navas asked to be removed from the National Athletics Team, the sports media announced. Full Swing and Play Off Magazine.
The news was confirmed by the journalist from Radio Habana Cuba, Raúl Rodríguez, who published in Facebook: “They should never have said goodbye in that way to the sport to which they contributed so much for years. The world champion and Olympic silver medalist in pole vault Yarisley Silva Rodriguez and her coach Alexandre Navas Páez request withdrawal from the national athletics team”.
Last March Yarisley Silva decided not to participate in the World Indoor Athletics Championships, held in Belgrade, Serbia, in which she was included, due to problems first with her visa and then with her pole vaults.
As explained at the time by the National Athletics Commissioner, Yipsi Moreno, Silva could not travel directly to Belgrade from Spain, where he was, “because the European Union establishes that with his visa he could not stay in the area for more than three months, and he was already very close to that limit. He then had to go to Cuba and come back for the World Cup”.
Regarding the poles, Yipsi Moreno pointed out that “they were going to be sent directly from Spain, but the member of the Federation in charge of moving them tested positive for COVID-19 and had to stay in Spain. Yarisley Silva’s supplies could not be shipped and, although efforts were made to get them through other channels, the problem could not be resolved.”
Silva felt that she would not achieve her best performance with poles she was not familiar with.
Yarisley Silva, from Pinar del Río, 34, holds the Cuban records for pole vaulting outdoors (4.91) and indoors (4.82).
She was also a silver medalist at the London 2012 Olympic Games and world champion in the Beijing 2015 outdoor competition. In Moscow 2013 and London 2017 she won bronze.
According to the journalist from Swing Completeor, Yasel Porto, “the withdrawal request of the world and Olympic multi-medallist Yarisley Silva, along with her coach Alexandre Navas is one more drop in a glass where there is everything”.
