Doctors say that prolonged stress is very dangerous for the body. It causes malfunctions not only in the nervous system, but also in other body systems. Hair may fall out, skin quality deteriorates. You will be surprised, but it also affects the teeth: they can start to hurt, new holes appear. Stress can even trigger tooth loss!

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING

It is important to know: due to stress, the work of the immune system goes astray. The result is a decrease in protection against harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi (pathogenic flora begins to actively multiply), the development of chronic inflammation and exacerbation of already diagnosed diseases. In parallel, the concentration of stress hormones – cortisol, adrenaline, noradrenaline – is growing. Yes, short-term stress helps to mobilize the body’s defenses. But a long one deals a crushing blow to the body.

Due to stress, small vessels that feed the tissues of the teeth and gums can suffer and narrow. This happens as a result of the action of high concentrations of adrenaline in the blood and increased sugar – also a stress reaction.

FROM STRESS DRY IN THE MOUTH

In people under stress, salivation is reduced and the composition of saliva changes, that is, the oral cavity dries up. Saliva plays an important role in maintaining dental health. Its deficiency increases the risk of caries. The fact is that saliva has remineralizing properties for tooth enamel, simultaneously cleans it of food debris and bacteria, and also reduces the level of acidity in the mouth. If a person smokes or drinks alcohol, the situation is aggravated – the mouth dries out more.

In addition, if the mouth dries out, the compounds produced by bacteria and behind bad breath are released into the air. Normally, they are bound and precipitated by saliva.

Refusal of alcohol, tobacco, spicy and salty foods will help to correct the situation. Drink plain water (average 2 liters per day) and chew xylitol gum. There are also products that moisturize the mouth.

But if the problem is more serious – there is a burning sensation, pain against the background of dryness – you need to see a doctor.

AND WE GRIT OUR TEETH

Bruxism is another problem that goes hand in hand with stress. This is an involuntary grinding of the teeth, which occurs, as a rule, during sleep due to a spasm of the masticatory muscles. Bruxism occurs day and night in stressed people. Due to the strong clenching of the jaws and grinding of the teeth, the muscles, joints and teeth themselves are overloaded. Chips, cracks in the enamel may form; without proper intervention, the teeth become loose and even fall out. Headaches and discomfort in the temporomandibular joint also appear. With bruxism, dentists practice the appointment of protective caps that relieve excessive stress from the entire dentoalveolar system.

Ph.D. Pavel Kolesov, Deputy Chief Physician for Adult Dentistry, orthopedic dentist at the SM-Stomatology clinic:

– A person who is under stress can be seen immediately. He often has strongly developed chewing muscles, and also all teeth are erased, sometimes a group of teeth. The reason is nervous clenching of the jaws and bruxism, as well as bad habits. Sometimes a person does not even notice that during nervous experiences he clenched his teeth strongly. Because of what chips, abrasion appear. If the patient has implants, then cases of their fractures due to stress overload are known. Then you have to remove the implants and put new ones. Yes, it is possible to supply stronger structures made of zirconium oxide, which are more difficult to erase or chip. But in this case, muscles and joints will already suffer from overvoltage.

WHY GUMS ARE INFLATED

Experts state that stress predisposes to the development of gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) by activating the growth of harmful bacteria and / or weakening the body’s defense against them against the background of stress. Bacteria can also infect the periodontium – the tissues surrounding the tooth. The periodontium also suffers from chronic inflammation caused by malfunctions of the immune system.

Plus, if a person has a nervous habit of biting pencils and pens, then harmful bacteria will definitely get into the mouth. This is a direct path to the development of inflammation. “Even in people who, on the background of stress, begin to gnaw something, chips are often observed in one group of teeth. The appearance of tooth mobility is not excluded, ”says Pavel Kolesov

According to him, these problems can be avoided if you follow the rules of hygiene and undergo regular preventive examinations. Unfortunately, practice shows that under stress people often neglect these aspects. Throw in bad habits, a poor diet high in sugar, and sometimes eating disorders. It turns out the most favorable environment for inflammatory processes and caries.

– Eating disorders are serious diseases that often appear due to stress. For example, if a patient suffers from bulimia and causes himself to vomit, the condition of his teeth will be deplorable – they are quickly destroyed. Therefore, eliminating the source of psychological problems is critically important, the dentist emphasizes.
