According to Palestinian media reports, at least 22 people have been killed in a house fire in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip.

Like the news agency Wafa reported on Thursday evening, several children are said to be among the dead. Numerous people were injured.

The fire broke out in an apartment in Jabalia and spread to the rest of the building.

The fatalities have arrived at the Jabaliya hospital, the head of the clinic, Salah Abu Leila, told the AFP news agency.

According to members of the Islamist Hamas organization, which controls the Palestinian enclave on the Mediterranean Sea, the cause of the fire in Jabaliya was initially unclear.

A representative of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank said the authority had asked Israel to open the Eres crossing so that the injured could be treated.
