"Dog Catcher" unfit to drive: Zwickau Animal Rescue can no longer save

The animal rescue Zwickau car is scrap. But they don’t have the money for a new one. Now all that remains is telephone advice for emergency situations.

“Our 15-year-old Renault Berlingo is no longer roadworthy and will be scrapped, so we can no longer transport animals,” says Eileen Witt (48) from animal rescue.

The only thing left is telephone advice for emergency situations. For example, the animal rescuers give tips on what to do to stabilize the dog or cat. “Otherwise we offer first aid courses.”

A new “dog catcher” is not in sight any time soon. The donations are not enough for the helpers to buy a vehicle.

“There are certain requirements. For example, we have to be able to take care of the animal while we’re driving. Carpeting isn’t an option because germs get stuck there. And the car has to be correspondingly large. A discarded ambulance would be ideal.”

As a rule, the volunteers respond to medical emergencies and take animals – with the exception of wild animals – to the veterinarian or the clinic. There were four to five assignments a week. Despite the difficult situation, the four animal lovers don’t stick their heads in the sand. “We’re going to continue and help where we can.”
