Donald Blinken, the former ambassador of the United States in Budapest, has died, his son Antony Blinken, the current US Secretary of State, announced on his Twitter page.

My father inspired me to do public service. He lived with decency, dignity and modesty. He loved his wife and family. He built a wonderful life and gave me a wonderful life. I love you dad

– the American diplomat wrote in his post.

Donald Blinken died peacefully at his home in East Hampton, Long Island, a State Department official said. The former diplomat was 96 years old.

Donald Blinken was the president of the State University of New York between 1978 and 1990, then the US ambassador to Hungary between 1994 and 1997, during the Clinton administration.
