The driver of a white Saveiro pickup ran away after running over a man on Avenida Gunter Hans, around 7:30 pm this Tuesday (21) in Campo Grande. Marcelo Dias Benitez, 47, was rescued unconscious by the Fire Department and sent in serious condition to Santa Casa de Campo Grande.
According to the victim’s mother, Josefa do Santos, her son was on his way to a friend’s house when he was run over. “He had just come home from work,” she says. With the force of the impact, Marcelo hit his head, passed out and lost a lot of blood. The hit-and-run occurred two blocks from his residence, at the entrance to Jardim Ouro Preto.
According to a witness, the Sloop driver was at high speed and followed in the direction of the neighborhood towards the Center. He would not even have slowed down to pass a speed bump that is a few meters from the point where the pedestrian was run over. According to a witness, the driver of the pickup truck would have already rushed through the place in the opposite direction.
The accident attracted many onlookers to the scene. The Fire Department was called and found a serious head trauma and injury to the face of the victim. Marcelo was rescued in a conventional fire ambulance, but during the journey to Santa Casa, he would be transferred to an Ursa vehicle (Rescue and Advanced Support Unit) of the Fire Department. Police were also called and are looking for the driver of the vehicle.
