Elise Mertens (WTA 24) was frustrated on Friday after her elimination in the second round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami. The 20th seed was surprised by the 16-year-old wild card player Linda Fruhvirtova (WTA 279). The Czech won 7-5, 2-6 and 6-1.

“It’s stupid that I lost this match,” Mertens said. “The race was quite disjointed, with a lot of highs and lows. I think I served quite well, but I couldn’t take advantage of it.”
“In the second set I was able to raise my level, but I was too irregular. I made too many mistakes in the third set, while she played stable.”
“It’s not easy to play against a youngster who comes up and has nothing to lose. But I still have the experience in my favor. I should have been more consistent. That’s kind of the story of the past few weeks. I need to find the aggressive tennis again and limit my error burden. And take advantage of my storage. There are many things that could be improved”, concluded Mertens.
