England national team players they knelt on the pitch, in protest against racism. The measure was made before the debut match against Iran.

The English team has carried out this gesture since 2020, following the death of the African-American George Floyd during his detention in the US, as it is a form of protest against racism, very common in Anglo-Saxon countries.

Players and technical team met and decided to carry out the gesture during the World Cup. “It’s what we stand for as a team and we have done it for a long period of time”Southgate had said before the meeting.

“We feel that this is the biggest (moment) and we believe that it is a strong statement that will go around the world so that young people, in particular, see that inclusion is very important”, added the technician.

Controversy over the multicolored bracelet

Meanwhile, before the FIFA threat to admonish the players, seven teams resigned on Monday to wear the armbands of an anti-discrimination campaign.

The captains of seven European teams will not wear the bracelets that support the campaign “One Love” in tournament matches after FIFA threatened that players would receive yellow cards.

“As national federations we cannot put our players in a position where they can face sporting sanctionsincluding cards,” the seven soccer federations said in a joint statement Monday.

The decision came hours before Englishman Harry Kane, Dutchman Virgil van Dijk and Welshman Gareth Bale donned the “One Love” bracelets in Monday’s matches. The captains of Belgium, Switzerland, Germany and Denmark were also expected to wear the armbands in the coming days.

FIFA raised the possibility of displaying the yellow cards on Sunday during a tense meeting with the seven European federations, including the seven teams that had pledged to wear the armbands.

The “One Love” campaign started in the Netherlands. your symbol it is a multicolored heart, and aims to promote inclusion and diversity in football and in society.
