The cause of the flooded bicycle and pedestrian tunnel on Douaneplein in Mechelen is known. A power failure caused the pumps to fail. They normally drain the excess rainwater. The tunnel is again easily accessible.

The flooding in the tunnel under the intersection of the N15 has caused inconvenience to cyclists and pedestrians since Friday evening. Since the closure of another route, it is the only connection between Douaneplein and the center. Pedestrians got their feet wet, but many cyclists took the risk and made their way through the water.

The Mechelen-Willebroek police received several reports. He called for help from the fire department. The Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV), which manages all the road and bicycle infrastructure of the tangent, sent a technician to the site on Saturday. The man found that the pumps that normally drain the rainwater were no longer working.

Technicians then started looking for the cause of the power failure. “A cut cable in the electrical box next to the railway bridge caused a short circuit. As a result, all power eventually went out,” says Patrick Princen (Vld-Groen-m+), alderman for Public Works.

Technicians were able to repair the damage around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. “The pumps are working again after the power cut. The tunnel has emptied,” says Andy Frans, noise reduction coordinator at the city.
