Verstappen, who has three victories in the first five tests of the year, started from third place. Verstappen, current Formula 1 champion, reached 85 points and closed the gap with Leclerc (104) in the standings after an intense race at the Miami International Autodrome. “I am very happy to win here in Miami, it was a great Sunday for us”, declared the winner as he got out of his car.

“The race was physically very difficult”, admitted Leclerc, adding: “We had some problems with the tyre. The end was very competitive and I thought I could catch up with Max”.

Sainz, his Ferrari teammate, agreed: “It was a difficult race. The car was moving, it was sliding, but the podium is a decent result.”

The Miami Grand Prix, one of two races this year in the United States, was opened with a celebrity parade through the paddock, featuring legends of the sport such as Michael Jordan, Tom Brady and David Beckhamactors like Matt Damon and singers like Maluma.

The circuit, which housed 82,000 fans, was built in the parking lot of Hard Rock Stadium, site of the Masters 1000 tennis tournament and home of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.
