Just this week, when memes multiplied on social networks due to the chorizo ​​flavored fish croquettes sold in Cienfuegos, Cubans had already had to hear about moringaostrich and hutia meat, curieles, cassava flour Y potato and melon peels.

no wonder that last March, when the radio station Radio Guamá published an article highlighting the “nutritional value” of cockroach milk, the alarms of Cubans will go off.

Is that the list of “food” proposed by leaders of the Island or sympathizers of the communist regime, such as the Brazilian Frei Bettoit seems endless. CubaNet remember three of those prodigious foods, which would save Cubans from famine:

Commander’s moringa

The late dictator Fidel Castro was the maximum disseminator of the properties of moringa, a plant native to India that he considered a rich source of food, health and unlimited employment for Cubans.

Moringa was one of the last obsessions of the patriarch, who from his comfortable retirement dedicated several of his “Reflections” to it in the official press, making this plant one of the priorities of the country’s battered agriculture. Even, He went so far as to say that the plant possessed “all kinds of amino acids.”

However, Castro’s proposal did not excite most of the population, who from the beginning turned this bush into the object of jokes, an indirect way of making fun of the then decrepit ex-dictator.

For their part, the peasants who embarked on the adventure of the last Castroist delirium planted moringa on their farms, taking it for granted that they would have abundant profits, but those profits never came. In short, they wasted their time, their work and their investment.

In 2018, the Cuban regime created an institution to give continuity and materialize Castro’s ideas on food safety and health, the Science, Technology and Innovation Entity (ECTI) “Sierra Maestra”.

Ostrich meat and hutia

In April 2019, the commander of the Revolution, Guillermo García Frías, became the target of memes, criticism, and ridicule on social networks for his statements about the use of ostrich and hutia meat to feed Cubans.

At that time, García Frías pointed out in the official Mesa Redonda program that the island’s regime was working on ostrich farming as an effective alternative for the production and distribution of meat.

Likewise, he praised the properties of ostrich and hutia meat. In the case of the ratite, he went so far as to say that it produced “more meat than a cow”.

After his statements, which were considered “offensive” towards the people of the Island, photomontages that associated the image of the ostrich with that of García Frías and that of the late dictator Fidel Castro also multiplied. Due, “ostrich” led the searches of Cubans on the internet throughout April 2019.

“Decrepit chickens” and guts of pigs and cows

In 2020, the Minister of the Food Industry of Cuba, Santiago Sobrino Martínez, explained at the Round table that the agriculture sector was in charge of a new plan to produce MDM (what it defined as meat raw material).

“This is a program for other species, for small livestock: ducks, rabbits… Agriculture had a plant that is recovering, and as that progresses, we could produce more food and save on substituting imports,” he said.

Meanwhile, in an image used to illustrate his intervention, the term “decrepit hens” appeared, which immediately lit up the Cuban virtual space.

In the same program, Sobrino Martínez said that the food industry had managed to recover two million meters of beef and pork intestines to make croquettes.

“That is not from poor countries, that is an advantage of developed countries,” he concluded.
