MANZANILLO, Granma.- Sheltered by the deep-rooted passion that emerges from poetry, and inspired by the inescapable work of someone who has been considered the “poet of the Revolution” in Cuba, followers of this literary genre, from 11 provinces of the country, They will meet in this coastal city, from June 12 to 15, to celebrate here the 50th edition of the Manuel Navarro Luna National Homage Day.

As is tradition, during the four days of the cultural event, the analysis of the prolific poetic and revolutionary trajectory of that worthy son of the Homeland, whose golden pen placed him among the most high voices of the national lyric of the 20th century.

Manuel Navarro Luna (1894-1966) deserves no less. The beloved poet of the city of the Gulf, (where he was taken from a very young age, although he was born in Matanzas), became precisely one of the managers of modern social poetry on the Island, after delving, with the heartbreaking force of his verses, in the wounds of the beloved land -victim of the neocolonial Republic-; and then succeed in drawing with letters the emancipatory horizon of the Greater Antilles after the revolutionary triumph of 1959.

Ángel Larramendi Mecías, organizer of the event that pays tribute to his figure, and director of the Manzanillo Center for the Promotion of Literary Culture that bears the name of the author of Surco, explained to Granma that, in this edition, in addition to the usual poetry readings , literary presentations, and exchanges between writers and their audiences, there will be two talks dedicated to illustrating the closeness between the poetic work of Navarro Luna and that of Nicolás Guillén, as well as their fraternal correspondence.

He pointed out that for the first time the event will be extended to rural communities of Manzanillo and an exhibition related to the history of the days of homage to Manuel Navarro Luna will be held.

Larramendi Mecías added that together with the remembrance of the poet and patron of Manzanillo Juan Francisco Sariol, the contest will also be dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the transfer of the remains of Navarro Luna to the city of the Gulf; 110 of the Manzanillera magazine Orto; and 120 of the birth of the national poet Nicolás Guillén.

As the culmination of the event, on June 15 – the date that marks the 56th anniversary of the death of the distinguished Cuban bard – the traditional pilgrimage will take place from the center of the city to the local necropolis, where his mortal remains rest; and the Manuel Navarro Luna National Poetry Prize will be awarded, for which more than fifty works are eligible.
