The government is changing the existing rules for cutting down trees: due to the lack of gas, the country is being prepared for wood burning, and practically all prohibitions are being removed from the path of logging; it will also be easier to cut down trees in a protected area – Mayor Gergely Karácsony wrote on Friday on his social page.
If there’s anything else to add to the climate anxiety, it’s that the government has not only improved our outlook, but has switched to double-speed in cutting down the wood under the entire country, in the strictest sense of the word.
Gergely Karácsony wrote: a government decree published on Thursday night completely overwrites the hard-to-achieve result that no more clear-cutting can occur in the protected forests of Budapest, nature conservation takes priority over logging, and in the reconstruction of naturally valuable forests, native tree species are prioritized in plant plans .
According to the mayor, the government should have had the opportunity to realize years ago that the real utility reduction is in building and window insulation, in passive houses, and in the use of renewable energies.
Until now, the poorest people have been heating with wood, they were not affected by the utility reduction, it is time for the state to finally show solidarity and provide meaningful support to these people. And they have an obligation to consult with us, with local governments, before they even cover up our forests
– concluded the mayor’s post.
