Kurten – When a carriage horse in Kürten (Rheinisch-Bergischer district) startled yesterday afternoon, it bolted and tore a carriage with two occupants with it.
The animal in the village of Richerzhagen is said to have been startled around 3 p.m., after which it stepped over the pull cord, according to the police report. The other horse was also startled and both animals panicked.
The 50-year-old carriage driver from Bergisch Gladbach could no longer control the situation and handed the reins to her 69-year-old passenger. But even he couldn’t calm the horses, so the team went off the road.
The carriage overturned with its occupants and was pulled a few meters further by the horses before it finally came to a standstill in an upright position.
